Each Highlander trim level comes available with a V6 engine that provides 295 hp, which is standard across most of the lineup. If you want more horsepower in the Ford Explorer, you have to upgrade all the way to the Sport or Platinum trim levels, both of which cost close to $50,000.

When equipped with the V6 engine, the Toyota Highlander can tow up to 5,000 pounds. You are able to access these capabilities in the base trim, but to tow a comparable amount in the Explorer, you have to upgrade to the Sport or Platinum configuration.

Johns Creek drivers can also opt for a hybrid model from Toyota, and this trim level is both more powerful and fuel-efficient than other models. The Ford Explorer is not currently available as a hybrid.

Explorer vs. Highlander: Safety

Cumming drivers torn between the Highlander and Explorer will have an easier time choosing when they compare the safety features. Only Toyota offers these standard safety features:

Integrated turn signal mirrors

Lane departure warning

Lane keeping assist

Pre-collision system with automatic emergency braking

Even though some of these features are available in upgraded Explorer configurations, others are unavailable. Also, upgraded Highlander models can get a Bird’s Eye View camera. You won’t find a comparable safety feature available in the Explorer.
