For 2023, Toyota did something that made a lot of people nervous: they took the V6 out of the Highlander. Three-row family SUV, six cylinders gone, replaced by a turbocharged four. If your first reaction is skepticism, that is the correct instinct — and then you look at the numbers, and the skepticism does not survive them.

The 2.4-liter turbocharged i-FORCE four makes 265 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The V6 it replaced made roughly 263 lb-ft. So the new engine makes more torque, not less — and it makes peak torque at 1,700 rpm, which is the part that actually matters. Torque low in the rev range is what moves a loaded three-row SUV away from a stoplight, up a grade with seven people aboard, and onto an on-ramp without drama. The V6 made you work up to its power. This engine hands it to you immediately. It runs through a conventional 8-speed automatic — no CVT — and it is rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped, same as before. You gave up two cylinders and got back low-end torque and better fuel economy. That is not a downgrade dressed up as progress. It is just better.

XLE is the trim most people should buy, and this is why. Second-row captain's chairs rather than a bench, which means an open aisle to the third row and no folding-and-climbing.
