Most off-road packages are a suspension and a set of tires bolted to a normal vehicle. The Bronco Raptor is the reverse: Ford started with a desert race truck and built a Bronco around it. The body is nearly ten inches wider than a standard Bronco to make room for the suspension, and the suspension is the point. Fox 3.1-inch internal-bypass shocks with Live Valve read the terrain and the vehicle's position hundreds of times per second and electronically adjust their damping on the fly — soft over a washboard, firm through a corner, fully stiff for a landing — so the same truck that crawls a rock ledge at walking pace can run a sand road at speeds that would destroy an ordinary 4x4. There is 13 inches of ground clearance, the Bronco's HOSS 4.0 suspension, and 37-inch tires as standard equipment. It is the most capable vehicle Ford builds that is not a race car, and it wears a license plate.

The engine is a Raptor's. The 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 — rated at 418 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque, the most powerful engine ever put in a Bronco — through a 10-speed automatic, with an Advanced 4x4 system that includes a 4A automatic mode, electronic locking front and rear differentials, and a Baja mode among the G.O.A.T. drive settings that keeps the turbos spooled for high-speed dirt.

The original owner then optioned it correctly. The 17-inch Dark Carbonized Gray forged aluminum beadlock-capable wheels — a $1,995 option — are forged rather than cast, so they are lighter and stronger than the standard set, and they accept beadlock rings for running low pressure in sand without unseating a tire. The Interior Carbon Fiber Pack ($1,725) replaces the interior trim with real carbon. The Raptor graphic ($1,075) runs down the flanks, and a keyless entry keypad ($110) lets you leave the key in the truck when you are in the water. That is $4,905 in standalone options, and on top of it the original owner added Equipment Group 374A, a $3,050 group. Iconic Silver Metallic is the color the Raptor's wide fenders and graphics read best against.

Inside, it is a modern Ford. SYNC 4 with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the 12-inch touchscreen, the Black Onyx interior, and Ford Co-Pilot360 with a pre-collision assist system with pedestrian detection that watches the road ahead and can brake on its own.
