There are Bronco Sports, and then there is the Badlands. They are not the same vehicle. Every other trim in the lineup runs a 1.5-liter three-cylinder. The Badlands is the only one that gets the 2.0L EcoBoost — 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque — through an 8-speed automatic with paddle shifters. That is roughly seventy more horsepower than the rest of the range, and it changes the vehicle completely: it merges, passes and climbs without ever being wrung out. We have the original window sticker on this one, and it reads $38,170.

The four-wheel-drive hardware is the real thing, not a badge. Advanced 4x4 with a Twin-Clutch Rear Drive Unit and a rear differential lock — actual mechanical hardware that can drive a single wheel when the others have nothing under them. Underneath there are metal bash plates and an off-road-tuned suspension; up front, tow hooks. The Terrain Management System carries all seven G.O.A.T. Modes — Ford's Goes Over Any Type of Terrain settings, including Mud/Ruts and Rocks, which are exclusive to this trim; lesser Bronco Sports get five. Trail Control works as a low-speed off-road cruise control, handling throttle and brakes so you can concentrate on steering, and a front 180-degree camera lets you see over a crest or around a blind trail corner before you commit to it.

Now here is the part the online listing never tells you: this interior was built to be hosed out. The Badlands has rubberized flooring, a rubberized cargo floor, and — the detail that gives it away — a rubber-backed rear seat, so when you fold the seat down the surface facing up is wipeable rather than carpet. Wet dogs, muddy boots, a cooler that leaked, a kayak that did not fully drain. None of it is a problem. There are MOLLE-strap zipper pockets on the seatbacks for strapping gear where you can reach it, a 110V/400W power outlet for charging real equipment, and a flood light built into the liftgate that lights up your whole tailgate area at a trailhead or a campsite after dark. This is not a crossover with an adventure trim package. Somebody engineered it for people who actually get it dirty.

And yet it is finished like a nice vehicle. The seats are Ebony/Roast leather-trimmed — the warm brown-and-black two-tone that is the best-looking interior in the Bronco Sport range — and this one carries the $2,085 Premium Package, which brings a Bang & Olufsen 10-speaker sound system, an 8-way power driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, a wireless charging pad, rear parking sensors, remote start, a universal garage door opener, and HD Radio. Add the standard SYNC 3 with an 8-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 6.5-inch digital instrument display, heated power mirrors, LED headlamps with signature lighting and automatic high beams, LED fog lamps and taillamps, privacy glass, and a keyless entry keypad on the door. It goes to the trailhead and it goes to dinner.

Area 51 is the color that made this vehicle. Not gray, not green, not quite blue — a muted military shade that shifts with the light and the angle, and the signature color of the entire Bronco family. Over the Ebony/Roast leather, with black roof side rails and the carbonized gray grille with white BRONCO lettering across the nose, on 17-inch carbonized gray wheels wearing 225/65R17 all-terrain tires — genuine all-terrains from the factory, not all-seasons with an aggressive tread printed on them. This is not the spec somebody settled for. It is the spec somebody chose.

The Safari-style roof and the flip-up liftglass are more useful than they look. That raised rear roofline creates real vertical space — enough for a mountain bike to stand upright inside with the front wheel off. The liftgate glass opens separately, so you can drop something in the back in a tight parking space without swinging the whole hatch, and there is under-seat storage in the rear plus a 60/40 split-folding rear seat.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard. Forward collision mitigation senses an impending impact ahead and acts to prevent or reduce it. Pedestrian impact prevention monitors the road, identifies and tracks pedestrians, and takes action if a collision becomes likely. The rear camera includes a washer — on a vehicle genuinely meant to see dirt roads, that is the difference between having a backup camera and having one you can use. There is also a FordPass Connect 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, SOS post-crash alert, a perimeter alarm, and SecuriLock anti-theft.

A local note: this Bronco Sport was originally delivered to Long-Lewis of Hoover, just outside Birmingham — about three hours west of us. It has spent its life in the Southeast rather than somewhere that salts the roads all winter, which on a vehicle with this much exposed underbody hardware is worth something real.

Straight talk on the 68,392 miles.
