1,020 horsepower. Zero to sixty in 1.99 seconds. A quarter mile in 9.23 seconds at 155 mph. Those are the numbers for the Model S Plaid, and they belong to a four-door sedan with a trunk, a frunk, a back seat you can put car seats in, and enough room to take four adults to dinner. When it arrived it was quicker to sixty than essentially any production car you could buy at any price — supercars included, several of them costing three and four times as much. It is still, five years on, one of the quickest vehicles ever sold to the public. And it is sitting on our lot in Cumming.

About the name, because people ask. Tesla had already used "Ludicrous" for its previous quickest mode — a joke lifted from Spaceballs. In that film, the only thing faster than ludicrous speed is when the ship goes plaid. So when Tesla built something quicker than Ludicrous, there was exactly one thing it could be called. The name is a punchline. The car absolutely is not.

Three motors, and the layout is the clever part. The Plaid uses tri-motor all-wheel drive: one motor at the front, and two independent motors at the rear — one for each rear wheel. Because each rear wheel is driven by its own motor, the car can send different amounts of power to the left and right sides thousands of times a second, which is torque vectoring in its purest form. That is what keeps 1,020 horsepower from simply lighting up the tires, and it is why the thing corners far better than a sedan of this size has any business doing. Top speed reaches 200 mph with the appropriate high-performance tire setup.

It also goes a very long way on a charge. Tesla rated the Plaid at up to 390 miles of range on the 19-inch wheels. That is Cumming to Charleston without plugging in, or Cumming to Nashville with room to spare — and along the way you have access to the Tesla Supercharger network, which is still the most built-out, most reliable fast-charging system in the country. Day to day, though, most Plaid owners rarely use it. You plug in at home overnight and leave every morning with a full battery. No gas stations. Ever.

2021 is the first model year of all of it. Plaid deliveries began in June 2021, and that same year brought the completely reworked Model S interior — the landscape center touchscreen, the driver display, a rear-seat touchscreen for passengers, a 22-speaker audio system, tri-zone ventless climate control, and onboard computing power Tesla compared to a PlayStation 5. Wireless phone charging front and rear. Over-the-air software updates that have continued adding features to this car since the day it was built. A first-year Plaid is the first year of a genuinely significant vehicle.

47,563 miles on an electric car is not what it is on a gas car. There is no oil to change, no timing belt, no spark plugs, no transmission, no exhaust system, no fuel pump — the entire category of things that wear out and get expensive around this mileage simply does not exist here. Regenerative braking does most of the ordinary slowing, so friction brakes on a Tesla routinely last two and three times as long as a conventional car's. The maintenance history on a vehicle like this is short because there is very little to maintain.
