Difference Between Hybrid, Plug-In Hybrid, and EV Models
With fuel prices on the rise, many people are looking for electric and hybrid alternatives. Fortunately, Toyota offers an extensive lineup of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles. Hybrid technology has been on the market for over 20 years, which is more than long enough for most to consider it highly reliable. While it was initially the only eco-friendly alternative driving technology, other options like the plug-in hybrid and Electric Vehicle (EV) models have been developed over recent years.
Hybrid Models
The hybrid model includes both an electric and a gasoline engine. The electric motor supplements the gasoline engine while traveling at low speeds and when coasting. Hybrids have excellent fuel mileage, lower emissions than gasoline-only vehicles, and never need to be plugged in.
These are excellent vehicles for those looking for more fuel-efficient operation without worrying about charging their new vehicle. However, they can cost, on average, about $1,000 to $3,000 more than their gas-only alternatives.
Plug-In Hybrid
The plug-in hybrid is a mix between a traditional hybrid vehicle and a new electronic vehicle. These models offer a larger battery than most hybrid models so that you can travel further on electric power. The plug-in hybrid will switch back and forth between its gasoline and electric motors. You won’t need any special plug for this type of vehicle as it only has 120-volt battery packs. Some of the newer plug-in hybrid models even allow their owners to cash in on federal tax incentives up to $7,500.
EV Models
The EV model is a fully electric motor vehicle with a driving range of well over 200 miles. It has multiple battery packs that power its electric motors. Unlike the plug-in hybrid, the EV models will have 240-volt batteries. These require a specialized charger and will take about 8 to 10 hours to recharge fully.
EVs offer a very quiet operation, a quick acceleration experience, and no tailpipe emissions and are cheaper to maintain due to their limited components. Owners can enjoy recharging their vehicles from the comfort of their own homes. No visit to the costly gas pump is needed. However, if you’re going to be traveling with your EV, you’ll have to do some pre-planning to ensure that you’ll be able to have access to the right charger.
