Paired with a 48-volt system that adds its own electrical assist, the result is an engine that responds like something much larger and much less complicated. The technology traces back to Mercedes-AMG's Formula 1 program, which is not marketing — it is where the engineering came from.

The chassis is built to match. AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive with a rear-biased torque split, so it behaves like a rear-drive vehicle in the corners and an all-wheel-drive one when the road is wet. AMG Ride Control adaptive damping, which firms up or relaxes based on how you are driving. And rear-axle steering as standard — the rear wheels turn slightly with or against the fronts depending on speed, which makes a mid-size SUV park like something smaller and change lanes at speed like something wider. A 9-speed AMG automatic handles the shifting, and it will run to sixty in under five seconds.

And it is specified sharply.
