When someone orders an F-150 XLT, the engine box is where they reveal what they actually intend to do with the truck. The standard engine is fine. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 is the one you pay extra for, and the one you choose when the trailer is real. It is rated at 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque — more torque than the F-150's own V8 — with twin turbochargers that deliver that torque low in the rev range, where a loaded truck needs it. It is the same engine family Ford puts under the hood of the Raptor, in a different tune, and it is the engine behind the F-150's highest tow ratings. Paired with the 10-speed automatic, it pulls a boat up the ramp at Lake Lanier like the boat is not there.

Then they checked the 301A box. Equipment Group 301A — a $1,585 option — is where the XLT stops being a work truck with a nicer badge. The technology is current. Ford's SYNC 4 system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the F-150's large center touchscreen, plus a Wi-Fi hotspot.
